Velosef, Cephradine Uses and Side Effects

Velosef is produced by GSK, it contains Cephradine. It is the best medicine for skin and soft tissue infections, eye, and ear infections, urinary tract infections, tonsillitis, dental abscess, surgical prophylaxis, upper respiratory tract infection, skin boils, and pimples on the face. Cephradine is the first generation of cephalosporin, which active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Cephradine is mostly being given to infections caused by bacteria.

Indications

Lower Respiratory Infection (Lobar, bronchitis, and bronchopneumonia)

Skin and Soft Tissue Infection (Abscess, Cellulitis, Acne, Boils, Furunulosis and Impetigo)

Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI, LRTI, Bronchitis, Sinusitis, Otitis media, Tonsillitis)

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI, Urine Burning)

Bones and Joint Infection

Septicaemia and endocarditis

Surgical Prophylaxis

Dosage

Dose for Adults

Disease	Dose for Adults
Respiratory tract infection Or skin and soft tissue infection	250mg every 6 hours or 500mg every 12 hours (Also depends on the severity of infection)
Uncomplicated urinary tract infection	500mg every 6 hours or 1g every 12 hours
Prostatitis and Epididymitis	2 to 4g daily in four equally divided doses intramuscularly or intravenously
Pneumonia	500mg 4 times a day
Bones infection	1g 4 times a day
Severe infection like Endocarditis	2g 4 times a day given intravenously
Postoperative Infection or Contaminated Surgery	1-2g intravenously or intramuscularly 30 to 90 minutes prior to start of surgery

Dose for Children

Mild to moderately severe infection	25-50mg/kg every 6 or 12 hours
Otitis media or H. Influenza	75 to 100mg/kg every 6 or 12 hours
Skin and soft tissue infection	100 to 250mg/kg every 6 or 12 hours

Side Effects

Severe adverse reactions of Cephradine include Seizures, blood, and lymphatic disorder, Pseudomembranous colitis, immune system disorders, nervous system disorders, thrombophlebitis, anaphylactic reaction, etc. In acute overdosage, it can cause nausea, rashes, convulsions, diarrhea, etc. Common side effects of cephradine include nausea, skin rashes, local pain, vaginitis, headache, and diarrhea, etc.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Precautions: Cephradine should not be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding or impaired kidney or liver dysfunction. Consult your physician before taking velosef in pregnancy and lactation. 

Velosef Syrup For Children

Note: Add boiled cool water up to the mark and shake well. Once reconstituted the suspension can be used within 7 days or 14 days if stored under a refrigerator (-8C).
