Uses and Side Effects of Omeprazole 20mg/40mg

Omeprazole is being used to treat stomach pain, which contains heartburn, acidity, indigestion, dyspepsia, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, acid reflux, and GERD. Omeprazole actually decreases the level of acid in our stomach. Due to acid reflux, you may find pain and irritation in your esophagus as well. This irritation in the esophagus may cause coughing and you also feel difficulty in swallowing food. Omeprazole is being added to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).


Omeprazole is being used for the indication and treatment of the following diseases

Active Duodenal Ulcer

Active Benign Gastric Ulcer

Heartburn and other symptoms associated with GERD

Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome

Erosive Oesophagitis


Prophylaxis of acid aspiration

Omeprazole is an over-the-counter sale product, which means it is easily being practice in developing courtiers without a doctor’s prescription. When we prescribe omeprazole for patients we give some instruction as well such as use it before meals and do not use pepper with it.

Omeprazole is available in four forms, such as tablets, capsules, sachets, and injections.


Weight Dosage
10-20kg Omeprazole 10mg daily
>20kg Omeprazole 20mg daily

Dosage may be increased to 20mg-40mg in Helicobacter Pylori (HP) eradication regimens in peptic ulcer disease.

Side Effects of Omeprazole

In many cases, omeprazole is well tolerated but when it becomes severe it can cause the following side effects

Body as a whole: omeprazole can cause fever, pain, abdominal swelling and fatigue, etc

Gastrointestinal: In gastrointestinal omeprazole can cause anorexia, fecal discoloration, pancreatitis, anorexia, elevated blood pressure and dry mouth, etc

Cardiovascular: chest pain, tachycardia, bradycardia, angina, elevated blood pressure peripheral edema and palpitation, etc.

Musculoskeletal: Cramps, muscle weakness, joint pain, and bone pain, etc

Metabolic/Nutritional: In some cause, it can cause hypoglycemia and weight gain

Nervous system/psychiatric: Psychic disturbances including depression, hallucinations, aggression, insomnia, confusion nervousness, anxiety, tremors, dream abnormalities, and vertigo, etc.

Skin: Rash stevens-johnson syndrome, urticaria, skin inflammation, pruritus, dry skin, and alopecia, etc.

Respiratory: In the respiratory tract, it can cause pharyngeal pain and epistaxis, etc.

Special senses: In special senses, omeprazole can cause tinnitus.

Haematological: Agranulocytosis, rare instances of pancytopenia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, leucocytosis, anemia, and hemolytic anemia have been reported.

Urogenital: Omeprazole can also cause urinary tract infection, interstitial nephritis, urinary frequency, proteinuria glycosuria, testicular pain, and gynecomastia, etc.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Omeprazole is safe in pregnancy and lactation but better to not use it, because it contains so many side effects. Consult your physician before taking omeprazole in pregnancy and lactation.
