This article is about indomethacin for gout side effects and indications. Indomethacin is an anti-inflammatory, nonsteroidal, analgesic, and antipyretic agent. It was introduced in the market in 1963. It is being used for the indication and treatment of pain, inflammation, fever, spasm and strains, analgesic, back pain, knee pain, musculoskeletal, osteoarthritis, gout, ankylosing, dysmenorrhoea, rheumatic disease, dental pain, bone pain, swelling and also being used to reduce pain after surgery.


Indomethacin capsules are effective in the following stages

Moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis

Moderate to severe ankylosing spondylitis

Moderate to severe osteoarthritis

Acute pain shoulder (bursitis and tendinitis)

Acute gouty arthritis

Side Effects

Some common and adverse side effects of Indomethacin includes

Gastrointestinal: Side effects of gastrointestinal include nausea, vomiting, indigestion, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, flatulence, rectal bleeding, GERD, duodenum, and abdominal discomfort, etc.

Central Nervous System: It will affect the central nervous system as well. These side effects contain dizziness, vertigo, depression, fatigue, nervousness, insomnia, mental confusion, drowsiness, aggravation, epilepsy, coma, convulsions, and peripheral neuropathy, etc. A research finding shows that Indomethacin causes 11.7% of headaches if a person uses it for a longer period of time.

Special Senses: Prolong use of Indomethacin causes deafness, blurred vision, hearing problem, diplopia, and tinnitus, etc.

Cardiovascular: hypertension, tachycardia, congestive, chest pain, heart failure, palpitations, and arrhythmia, etc.

Metabolic: Weight gain, edema, fluid retention, sweating, glycosuria, and hyperkalemia.

Hematology: Bone marrow depression, leukopenia, gastrointestinal bleeding, anemia, and intravascular coagulation.

Genitourinary: Vaginal bleeding, none hematuria, proteinuria, interstitial nephritis, renal failure, etc.

Warning: It should not be given to children below 14 years

Contraindications: Indomethacin is contraindicated to patients who are hypersensitive to this product. Secondly, it is contraindicated in patients in whom acute asthmatic attacks, rhinitis is prescribed by aspirin.

Precautions: Initially, it is eliminated by the kidneys; therefore patients with renal function should be closely monitored.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Indomethacin should not be used in pregnancy and lactation. Consult your physician if you desperately need it.

Overdosage: Following symptoms may occur after acute overdosage such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, mental confusion, etc. In such cases just reduce its dose.
